Universal Pictures is eyeing Sydney Sweeney to play Britney Spears in an upcoming biopic directed by Jon M. Chu. The project comes with one significant condition: Spears now expects to hold substantial creative influence over how her own story reaches the screen, with negotiations described as "more productive" after months of stalling over her level of involvement.

A Hollywood source tells Reality Tea that Sweeney, 28, is "one of the names generating the strongest interest," citing her "profile, range and familiarity with Britney's image." Chu, fresh off directing Wicked, is attached to helm the film. Liz Meriwether, who created New Girl, wrote the screenplay adapted from Spears' 2023 memoir "The Woman in Me." Marc Platt is producing.

The field is wide

Sweeney is not the only name circling the project. Millie Bobby Brown has publicly wanted the role longest, telling Drew Barrymore: "When I look at pictures of her, I feel like I could tell her story in the right way." Addison Rae, Bailee Madison, and Kylie Schultz remain under discussion too, per Gulf News. Rae brings Louisiana roots that match Spears' own origin and a background in dance and music that adds to her case.

Chu has said casting has not formally started. "We're just trying to get the story right," he told reporters, per FandomWire. That puts any frontrunner status firmly in the early-buzz stage, before a formal offer exists.

Britney's condition: she writes the rules now

The creative-control piece is what separates this project from the biopic wave that peaked years ago. Spears previously hesitated to revisit difficult chapters of her life on screen, and the project stalled. Now sources say talks have turned "more productive," and she is expected to hold significant sway over the film's direction, per Thought Catalog. Meriwether has called the memoir "one of the best audiobooks that's ever been made" and said the material "broke my heart in so many ways," which is the language of a writer already aligned with the subject, not one looking to impose a narrative from outside.

Two performers, one axis

Here is what the outlet stories do not say directly. Both Sweeney and Spears have spent years defined by battles over who controls their image, and they got there from opposite directions. Sweeney spent 2026 as the hands-on architect of her most controversial ad campaigns, overseeing camera angles, music choices, and rewrites on the Novig campaign from the inside. She did not just star in it. She built it. Britney spent thirteen years under a conservatorship where her father held legal authority over her body, her brand, and her finances. The conservatorship ended in 2021. The memoir came in 2023. The biopic is the third act of that reclamation.

Cast Sweeney to play Britney and you have two performers who understand image ownership from opposite ends of the same axis. One built hers deliberately. One had hers stripped legally for over a decade. The question the film will have to answer is whether that resonance is a feature or a complication. Our read: it is a feature. Sweeney has shown she can carry the weight of intense public scrutiny without collapsing under it. That is exactly what playing Britney Spears at her lowest requires.

The fan argument is the wrong argument

Social media reaction to Sweeney's name is split, which is predictable. Critics point to her ad controversies as evidence she lacks the seriousness the role demands. Supporters cite her Euphoria range and her ability to absorb intense public attention without breaking. Neither side is entirely wrong. What both camps are really arguing about is whether a commercial persona disqualifies you from playing someone who became famous partly by losing control of hers. The answer to that is no, and the casting conversation misses the point anyway. Britney holds creative input now. The person she chooses will matter more than the person the internet nominates.
