Sydney Sweeney’s Novig ad, explained: the nude betting campaign that lit up the internet

Sydney Sweeney went nude for Novig, a sports prediction app she also holds equity in. It landed days before the NFL season and drew fast backlash from female athletes.

Novig · Sports prediction market app

Sydney Sweeney is once again the most talked about face in advertising, and once again it has nothing to do with a film. In September 2026 she appeared nude in a campaign for Novig, a sports prediction market app, posing with footballs, basketballs and other athletic gear. Novig also named her a strategic partner and equity holder, so this is not a one off endorsement. She has a stake in the company she is selling.

What the ad actually shows

The spot runs about 42 seconds. Sweeney appears nude, covering herself with sports equipment, intercut with shots of her in football pads and a jersey, repeating the word "sports." The tagline takes a swing at rivals: "Just sports. No betting on wars or deaths and no politics." It ran across TV, streaming, social and out of home, timed to the first game of the 2026 NFL season, the most valuable attention window in American sport.

Wait, Novig is not a normal sportsbook

This detail matters and most coverage skips it. Novig is a prediction market, not a traditional bookmaker. Users trade contracts on outcomes against each other on an exchange, and the company operates under a federal CFTC framework rather than state by state gambling licences, which is how it reaches all 50 states. It is 21+, founded in 2021, and led by chief executive Jacob Fortinsky. Its direct rivals are Kalshi and Polymarket, not FanDuel or DraftKings.

Why it caused a backlash

The pushback came fastest from inside sport. Australian Olympic swimmer Ariarne Titmus called the ad a kick in the face to every woman who has dedicated her life to perfecting her craft. Team GB sprinter Amy Hunt answered with a picture of real athletic effort, writing that this is what women in sport look like: muscles, hard work, sweat, blood and tears. Surfer Felicity Palmateer asked how far you can put women’s sport backwards in a 42 second commercial. The core tension is hard to miss. A campaign that insists it is about sports uses a nude actress rather than an athlete to sell it, at the exact moment women’s sport is winning mainstream legitimacy on its own terms.

How Sweeney responded

Sweeney leaned into it, framing the ad around confidence and humour, and reportedly reposted past nude or near nude campaigns by celebrated sportswomen including Serena Williams, Ronda Rousey, Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe. The implied argument is that athletes have posed this way and been praised, so the objection is inconsistent. Critics countered that an athlete choosing to pose for herself is not the same as an actress being used to advertise a betting product.

The business logic

Fortinsky was candid that the ad "forces us into national discourse," and on that narrow measure it worked. Novig went from niche to nationally discussed in days. Newsweek argued the real winner is Sweeney herself, who collected an equity stake and a fresh wave of earned media in one move. It is the same playbook as her American Eagle campaign: pick an image provocative enough to guarantee argument, then let the argument do the media buying for you.

What it means

The Novig ad is a clean example of the modern outrage funnel, where the controversy is not a side effect but the distribution strategy. There is a second, quieter story underneath it. Prediction markets are using a federal classification to move faster than state gambling regulators, then buying celebrity equity and a national ad blitz during NFL kickoff. For Sweeney, it cements a pattern and a pivot at once: she is now less a paid spokesmodel and more an owner, one of the few celebrities who can reliably manufacture a national news cycle out of a single advertisement.
