Sydney Sweeney and Laneige: the quiet deal that never trends

Her Laneige partnership is the calm opposite of the Novig and American Eagle ads. It is a multi year global beauty ambassadorship built on repeat sales, not outrage.

For all the noise around the Novig and American Eagle ads, the longest running and most valuable deal Sydney Sweeney has is one almost nobody argues about. She has been the face of Laneige, the Korean skincare brand, for years. It never trends, and that is exactly the point.

What the deal actually is

Sweeney signed on as Laneige’s United States ambassador in 2022, then in January 2024 was named the brand’s first ever global ambassador. That upgrade matters. It moved her from a single market face to the person carrying the brand across roughly 40 countries, anchored to its hero product, the Lip Sleeping Mask. This is a conventional beauty ambassadorship, run the conventional way, at global scale.

Why it is the opposite of the ads

The Novig spot and the American Eagle campaign are built to provoke, because provocation buys attention. Laneige is built to reassure. There is no double meaning, no backlash, no politician weighing in. A beauty ambassadorship does not want a national argument. It wants you to buy the lip mask, like it, and buy it again. The whole design is repeat purchase, not a single viral moment.

Does calm actually sell

This is the real question, and it is where the two strategies diverge. Laneige has said the Lip Sleeping Mask sells on the order of 20 million units in a year, a figure that comes from the company rather than an independent audit, so treat it as a brand claim. Even discounted, it points at the thing the outrage ads struggle to prove: durable sell through. Recall that American Eagle’s viral quarter delivered huge awareness but only about 1% same store growth on its namesake banner. A quiet beauty deal that moves product every month can be worth more than a loud one that moves conversation for a week.

What it means

Put the deals side by side and a two track strategy appears. The provocations, Novig and American Eagle, are spikes that buy attention and, increasingly, equity stakes. The beauty and luxury deals, Laneige and Armani, are the base: stable, global, and built to compound. The ads are what you argue about. Laneige is what pays the bills.
